Asian American Community Meeting a Great Success

Asian American Community Meeting a Great Success

STATEMENT BY RAYMOND TANG, PRESIDENT
CHINESE UNITED ASSOCIATION OF GREATER PHOENIX
On July 21, 2017, Arizona State Senate Majority Leader Kimberly Yee hosted a meeting with Asian American community leaders and members to moderate a discussion about a public health proposal. Chinese United Association of Greater Phoenix (CUAGP) was present with officers and advisers as participants in this meeting.
A Senate Concurrent Resolution 1012 (SCR 1012) was suggested by the Asian Pacific Community in Action (APCA) non-profit organization through its Executive Director Mr. Lloyd Asato. APCA has provided vital community services for health and medical assistance for nearly 20 years locally to the Asian population in Arizona.
SCR 1012 was a resolution with no specified requirements to express in a formal manner the view that health services would be improved with more information on the diverse Asian American and Pacific Islander communities served by APCA. While SCR 1012 was never adopted in the House of Representatives and did not move through the entire legislative process, it was formally adopted with consensus by the Arizona Senate.
Senator Yee provided background at the meeting about the resolution that was brought to her office at the request of APCA which advocates for improved Asian American health needs. She said she recommended the issue be addressed as a resolution versus a bill to communicate the public health issue that was brought to her attention and that she has no plans to re-introduce the proposal or anything similar to it in the next session of the Arizona Legislature in January of 2018.
Senator Yee suggested that APCA should consult with the community in the future if it believed any similar measure might be helpful to the population it serves. APCA representatives in attendance at the meeting agreed that such community meetings would take place going forward.
Community members and leaders expressed their great satisfaction with these clarifications and the Senator extended hospitality to all present to visit and tour the Legislature whenever convenient. The meeting was a great success to open up dialogue between the various Asian American community organizations brought together by Senate Majority Leader Kimberly Yee.
CUAGP is an umbrella organization that has been since 1968 coordinating now 19 non-profit service clubs that promote the cultural heritage, the educational benefit, and rights/welfare of the local Chinese American community. It has membership composed of Chinese Americans of all origins ?U.S.-born, as well as new immigrants from mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and world-wide. Of course it has many members from the older established mainland immigrants from the Four Counties of Guangdong Province. CUAGP always promotes the benefit and future of all in every way possible; and we always act and oppose any steps from any direction which would be detrimental to our community interests.
